Choosing a Whirlpool Bath

You know you have ‘arrived’ when you consider buying a whirlpool bath. You have a great home and a swanky bathroom which is just begging for a whirlpool bath to be installed. Just shutting your eyes and visualizing it in your bathroom is not enough. Other practical problems include that of your water supply. Does your water heater hold sufficient water for the whirlpool bath? Will you need to upgrade your heater and increase the water capacity? It doesn’t make any sense to install a whirlpool bath if you don’t have enough hot water for it.

The other aspect is plumbing. Can the plumbing in your bathroom accommodate the demands of a whirlpool bath? Is there any provision to meet its requirements? Consider the changes you may have to make in the plumbing you have at present.

Another factor to be taken into consideration is that of electricity. Water and electricity can be a lethal combination. However, since a whirlpool bath is of no use without power, consult a qualified electrician. A professional can assess the existing power situation, the requirements of the whirlpool bath and the changes that need to be made. A priority area is the introduction of a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) in your bathroom for the whirlpool bath, to ensure your safety.

After considering the safety factors, you can decide on the placement of the whirlpool bath. Where will you install it? This will dictate the size and type of bath you would select. Do you require a corner tub to optimize space utilization? Or would you prefer a 5-foot model that can replace your existing bath tub? You can also get a recess mount tub to be installed between walls.
When you select your whirlpool bath look for these features:
To ensure consistent water temperature and save money, choose a model with an internal water heater.

Look out for a non-slip floor and grab bars opt for a model with a Low Water Sensor – this will automatically turn off the motor if the water level is too low.
Try to locate a tub with a self-cleaning system – this eliminates any residue that may cause bacteria build-up.
